I hope everyone will join in on the annual Clean-up day, which will happen on the next nice day. Since the snow has melted, we can see some of the inevitable trash that gets loose and strewn around, so we have a lot of work to do! This is a cooperative project between the City, School and the Community. We will announce Clean-up day in the morning on VHF channel 6, and lunch will be served for all participants at the school.
Thanks to all the people of King Cove. Because of you, we may yet accomplish our goal of a road from King Cove to Cold Bay, for the future of our people and Community. Please check IzembekEnhancement.org for information about our progress and our next steps. We are still optimistic that the project to upgrade and pave our city streets will move forward this summer. Our community will be safer and healthier when the majority of our roads are finally dust and pothole free. More info on this project as it develops. Two projects look promising for the 2009 work season: The rehab of the North boat harbor and a new hydroelectric plant from Waterfall creek. As always we will endeavor to employ as many local workers as possible for these projects as well. Were you interviewed for this study?. The official release of the ISER report " Economic and Social Impacts of BSAI Crab Rationalization on the Communities of King Cove, Akutan and False Pass " by Gunner Knapp and Marie Lowe is here. You may view or download the report here. Many residents of King Cove participated in this study. This report is also being released to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council's Crab Advisory Committee. The City continues to work to keep energy costs for our residents as low as possible. We currently have the lowest electric rates in the Aleutians East and beyond. Our next moves this year will include moving to the new power house this spring, and studying the best way to harness even more hydroelectric power from Delta Creek or the Waterfall creek. Soon, our newpowerhouse will supply low cost waste heat to the New School. King Cove wishes to continue to be a leader in alternative, low cost energy in rural Alaska. For more information, please check out this recent press release. Our next City Council meeting is scheduled for May 14. Check here for the agenda. Regular City Council meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month (7 PM) at the Alex & Mattie City Office Building. Public participation is encouraged! As the Mayor of King Cove, I am at your service. Please call me at the City Office or email eweiss@arctic.net if you have any questions or concerns. |
