Build a Shed Floor

There are many factors to be considered before you ever start to build a shed floor.
In this article I will tell you what to consider and why. I will try to help you eliminate problems in the decision making process instead of trying to fix them on the building end.

1. Choose a location that will need the least ground work and still be convenient. The reason for this the more unlevel the ground is the more material it will take to have a level surface. The next is the man hours and equipment needed to prepare the site.

2. You need to decide the size you want and the weight it will carry to build a shed floor. This will dictate the size lumber you will need and how much support you will need for the shed floor to sit on.

3. You will need to make a material list. How much lumber do you need and what size will they need to be. I suggest at least 2×6’s for floor joist set on 16 inch cents for a strong floor but you can set them on 2foot if you like. Will you use hardware for joist and corners or will you use wood for bracing and legers?

4. You now have to decide if you want the shed floor on the ground (which I would not suggest doing) or building it on blocks or piers. Your floor should be built with pressure treated wood this wood is resistant to rot and infestation.

Now it’s time to start building your shed floor. Make sure your blocks form a square and are level to one another. Now you can lay your plate making sure they are level and nail your band to it. If the floor is small enough you can nail the plate and band tighter before you set them, make sure you over lap one or the other so you tie in the bands and plate.

Connect your hardware or cut your corner braces and make your lay out line for you joist. Remember to lay out on either 16 or 24 so your plywood will lay out center. After you have your joist nailed its time to cut your blocking and install so you strengthen your floor. All that’s left is to cut and lay your ply wood and you are done building a shed floor.

There are so many things to consider when building woodworking projects that having a blueprint, material list and step by step instructions beforehand will save you headaches and frustrations. Being able to build your own tool shed, lawn furniture or any other woodworking project will save you money while giving you the satisfaction of a job well done.
