Five Useful Tricks of the Home Security Trade

There are many different methods to employ when setting up a quality home security system. Unanimously, the choice of an alarm system (whether wired or wireless) and monitoring company (whether with patrolling guards or not) seems to be the foundation of any good plan. That part is easy, as long as you study the setup of your house in the same way a burglar would. Once the groundwork has been laid and your home alarm system is up and running, there are plenty of other ways to make things safer for your family. Some call them tricks; others consider them insider tips, which circulate more via word-of-mouth than on any home security brochures. Either way, here are five ways to improve security around your house.

1. Handle your vacations wisely. When it comes time to enjoy the vacation you deserve, don’t let your guard down. Vacation times are very popular for burglars, as they know resistance will be at a minimum. Take care of most home security concerns by getting a house sitter. Business will appear to continue as usual.

2. Make a stroll on the grounds an uncomfortable proposition. Some criminals will want to do some “research” around your house before trying to get inside. Others may need to creep up and find a good time when the coast is clear. Either way, you want to make it as uncomfortable as possible for anyone moseying around your windows or doors. Plant a bunch of thorn-heavy bushes, making any type of approach a hard-fought battle.

3. Keep a humble appearance. Picture windows off of a family’s porch room or living are incredibly attractive, in terms of design and comfort. However, you have to remember that you are showing off the possessions inside to any interested party. Thieves often do their research on sunny afternoons, and you may unwittingly be showing them a new painting or antique which might end up on the wrong list.

4. Don’t let the lights go out. Burglars do not want to fight. If they did, they would probably work in a more violent form of crime, like holding up liquor stores or mugging individuals. The ideal night of work for a burglar is to see no one and walk away with a great deal of valuable merchandise, or just money. When you are not at home, try to keep up the impression that someone is around. The more difficult it seems to get at your house when no one is at home, the more unlikely a thief will make the effort.

5. Keep an animal presence, one way or another. Barking dogs have been known to send criminals packing before they even get inside a home. Whether it’s warranted or not, the picture of a dog’s teeth slashing into human flesh is a great home security help. Adopting a pet can bring a lot of love into the home, and a good deal of fear to a potential intruder.
