Since childhood, you have dreamt of owning a small house or apartment in Sydney. You have ultimately fulfilled your dream. It is a posh apartment that you own in the heart of Sydney but still you feel something is missing. Is it a green patch? Might be. So, if you are a nature lover or want a lush green patch or a colorful garden in your apartment, then yes, the solution lies in landscape gardening. Landscape gardening dates back to 18th century, which was then popularly known as ‘English garden’. The house and villas of the lords had enormous spaces where lush green lawns with fountains, trees, benches and paved paths added a touch of beauty to the otherwise magnificent house.

Recreating the same opulence in the balconies or courtyards of small houses or apartments in Sydney can be a challenge. Despite the limitations, many house owners in Sydney have successfully materialized this dream. Now, they can boast of their own landscape garden blooming with seasonal flowers. However, it is not necessary that a landscape garden has to be always created from scratch. While an unused space is perfect for creating a landscape garden, an existing garden can also be remodeled if required. The budget behind landscaping a garden depends on the area of space, your choice of decorative items and your plan as in how you want the landscape garden to look like.

However, don’t let the budget put your mind in a dilemma as a perfectly laid out landscape garden is worth the money and an asset to treasure. As such, it is better to hire the services of a landscape designer. Things work out fine and in a systematic manner as the designers have their professional ways to handle things. In Sydney itself, a good number of designers are available who are good in the business. With their innovative ideas and keen artistic sense, they will turn your courtyard into a beautiful landscape garden much to the envy of your neighbors.

There are various landscaping ways to utilize your backyard or courtyard. For example, a backyard can be turned into a perfect family entertainment area by building up a sunken space with the walls as the backdrop. The choice of landscape material should also be appropriate to blend with the look. For instance, a combination of facia stack stone walls as the seating place is well complimented by an Australian Hardwood deck. If you are planning to lay down a paved path through the middle of the garden, then granite, sandstone, marble, concrete or travertine are the best picks. Terraced gardens with mondo grass lining, small fountain and native plants suit the ambiance of an apartment in Sydney. Contours, use of rocks and pebbles along the paved path or a water body in the garden, and plants like cacti are also important elements in laying out a landscape garden. Those who can afford more space can also opt for an elaborate dining space or BBQ in their garden.

Therefore, landscape gardening is something that adds a charm to your house and makes it a place where you want to come back after a hard day’s work. In the midst of a bustling life in Sydney, nothing can match the beauty and serenity of your exclusively designed landscape garden that takes you to an entirely different world.

Growing Well is established in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, Inner West and North Shore. Whatever your plans for outdoors we intend to create the best landscape garden possible within budget. We provide all landscape services and can assist customers to achieve an attractive contemporary design, emphasising the key elements of planting and materials selection, and a greatly improved use of space.

If you are like most people you will notice that the retail stores are all decked out for the Christmas and Holiday season approaching. They are banking on higher sales as the economy picks up, so they are adding more lights to catch our attention. If you like the look of the Holidays like me, these decorations are getting us in the Spirit of the Season. This can only mean one thing… time to think about decorating my home.

Before you go out and buy lights to hang on everything not moving, let me give you some tips first.

Here are my dos and donts for using Holiday Lights.

1) Do pick a theme for your decor, like all white lights or blue or red. This will make more of an impact and ads some design style. No offense to the multi-color lovers out there. That is a different look all together that is equally charming. Those people might use jewel tones for candles and ornaments to add to the colorful scene.

2) Do not use different light sets together. Some people mix up their old and new lighting and I don’t like to see this. When you are dealing with electricity, even this low voltage type, you need to think about fire safety. Before you string up the lights outdoors and indoors, maybe you can take your kids or a small group of kids to your local firehouse to teach them some things about fire safety. This time of year is high on the list for fires caused by dried live trees lit up with faulty lighting. Call the fire house first to see when they could give you the tour and talk to your group. Then, throw out those old lights and buy them all from one place. GKI Bethlehem Lighting is my favorite if you can find them, but GE or another brand name would be a safe bet too.

3) Do wrap the lights loose around the branches or railings. Some times lighting gets too tight and can cause those blackouts in the strands we hate to see. One tip is to string your lights while they are on. Yes, this is not a hazard unless you get a call or a visitor. In that case, turn them off until you can get back to decorating. This keeps them cool and you can be sure to see any outages before you finish decorating. Once all the lights are in, then add the BLING!

4) Do not plug in more than 4 to 6 light strands together. Most companies will tell you on the packaging how many lights can snap together without over loading the little fuses. You may want to get extra bulbs and fuses when you are at the store, they never have them after the season is underway. If you think you will need extra, buy them all together when you get the big sale price. Yes, they may knock off another $2 later, but please save your self some headache and time…buy them now. You will spend more in time and gas going back for more lights, trust me. 100 count light sets, you can bet no more than 5 linked together. 25 and 50 count, I would make sure no more than 6 together. From my experience, and I have seen my share of Macy’s decorating, you can use the 6 ft and 8 ft extension cords to add more lights. The cords are easily hidden. No one will see it and you can be sure the lights will stay on and not blow a circuit or a fuse. You can also use black electrical tape to make sure the connections are safe and secure. This is a good husband job, they love hanging the lights. You can come back with your ornaments and glitter flowers when he’s done.

5) Do not over load your outlets. If you have any questions, electricians don’t mind a short consultation to let you know how to wire your Holiday decor. Better safe than sorry when you are lighting up like an airport outdoors. There are decorating companies that can help you and they know exactly how to wire everything safely.

6) Do have fun with your kids or friends in this process. Many times I have invited people over for drinks, music and games when we decorate for the Holidays. Make it an event to remember. They lights are great and all, but sharing memories with loved ones is priceless. That’s why we really have these Holidays anyway, right? There are religious events all through this season, but lets not forget the message of those celebrations. Peace! Joy! Love!

7) Do send me pictures, I would love to see your design work. If you get into a tough spot, I am available through email or a phone call. Ask all the questions you like, I am ready to help you. If you live in New York and don’t have the time to decorate, call me. Tell me what color you want and how you want it to look. My team and I will have you Decked Out in a Flash. Then you can enjoy your party and lavish in all the compliments when the music is rocking.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Interior design is very important in people’s lives because it expresses understanding of comfort, beauty, and adds value for the homes. Three aspects have to be combined when people start thinking about interior decoration: wall color, furniture and accessories.

Any room, whether it is an apartment or inside in your home looks dull and boring if the interior design is only bold painted walls and simple ordinary furniture – just like a sterilized place for surgical treatment.

This is especially true if, from the first look inside, what you see is this unexciting furniture that was bought from warehouses and looks exactly the same, like in other people’s homes – with the same framed pictures on the walls, the same light fixtures – it does not have the atmosphere that a family will enjoy being in. It is too plain, not unique, and is easy to forget.

You must notice that color of wall paint plays an important role in our lives. It reflects people’s personality. One way to give an impression of who you are is by decorating your home with unique choice of colors

Next, what should come to mind when you think of your home as a lovable, enjoyable place where it is nice to come back after a long, exhausting day. There are many available options and styles that add a unique look to your place. They have to be considered when you start home decorating. Combine the color of paint for the walls with comfortable furniture and different colored and textured rugs. Add a couple unique pieces – it is not necessary to have a big collection. A few of the right home accessories will make an amazing difference.

To begin, you will want to figure out right choice of furniture. It is very important because you need to consider some of factors – that the furniture set will complement room shape, size, and wall color. When it is too dark it can make room looks gloomy. Too much pure light color will make a room that has no personality. With the right choice of colors custom furniture can lighten or darken the surrounding area. Furniture can bring cozy, warm atmosphere, or can create a great, sophisticated look. Because custom made furniture will reflect your desires you certainly will feel that the room gained desired harmony.

While decorating your house, try to find out what exquisite looking accents you can add to improve the interior of your home. A few of the right accessories will make a big difference in creating your own style that matches your personal taste.

Imagine the enjoyable view if our eyes can see wonderful restored antiques or surprisingly bright modern designs. Art of Antique Restoration and Modern Design Creations are always eye-catching.

It can be a set of art pieces that softly blends with room décor or other masterpieces that speak loudly and have their own personality. In addition, because these unique custom made designs have a stylish look, any surroundings in the room can be arranged into an elegant style.

The latest technique in design patterns on copper plates and blocks allows creating wonderful art of modern copper wall decorations, modern copper light fixtures. They have a very attractive look because of unique patterns. Tables and chairs resurfaced with copper plates with unique designs will give special effects because patterns on copper plates change their colors depending on the light in the room.

These creations that turn heads and amazed people with their uniqueness will give a finishing touch that will make it easy to transfer any ordinary looking room into an exclusively designed place.

We met the husband and wife of this project at the Minneapolis “Lake Home & Cabin Show”. They came to us with a problem. He was an executive and she was a commercial architect.

Originally they purchased their lake property five years before our encounter. They planned on saving up and ultimately drafting the architecural plans themselves. However, without any third party to settle differences, the couple confided they were experiencing significant marital pressure through their own design process.

We explained to them one of BlueStone’s most valued services we offer our customers throughout the design process was marital reconciliation. They laughed and hired us to help them out.

There was an immediate release of pressure once we began designing for them. No longer was the couple at odds with each other. Rather, when differences came to the surface, we merely began problem solving and introduced ideas that incorporated the best of both sides. We were amazed at how beautiful the end product ended up compared to what we were first shown at the initial meeting. Synergy is powerful and often takes all of us to higher heights than any one of us could have achieved on our own. This was the case with the Thunder Lake project.

The master bedroom had to face the lake so the first image they experienced after waking up in the morning was warm sunlight bouncing off the waves. Sliding glass doors allowed easy access to the lakeside deck. And the master bath connected landward behind the bedroom. So far so good.

Their next combined goal was the great room had to face the lake. As did the dining room. And the kitchen had to be part of the great room and dinning room. Open design was very important. And glass windows covered a large percentage of the walls in order to bring the outdoors in.

Here is how we finally set up the floor plan. On the far left (as you are facing the lake) was the master bedroom. Master bath was behind that. Immediately right of master bedroom was the great room. It spanned all the way back to the landward main enterance. Moving right still further was the dinning room with the open kitchen behind that. In between dinning and kitchen was an island that could seat four on bar stools. From the kitchen you could see the lake and the majestic stone fireplace in the great room.

Hard work was done. However we still needed to include a loft , two bedrooms and a bath upstairs with access to a bonus family (play) room over the double garage. It worked out better than we planned giving plenty of space for family and friends to visit. Using their cabin as a family resort compound was a shared goal.

Material selections used were rustic, warm and inviting. The ceiling was tongue and grove pine. Great room walls were rough cut douglas fur on fireplace wall with sheet rock over remaining walls. Floors in great room, dinning and kitchen were wide plank douglas fur with alot of character. We hand nailed one inch long nails throughout entire floor (for looks) to enhance the rustic feel they were after.

Casework around windows was four inch pine which added interest both in color and texture against the douglas fur. We also installed a 12 inch wide douglas fur plank all the way around the great room and dinning room at 10 feet height to tie those rooms together.

All countertops had granite surfaces displaying distinctive natural patterns. Granite coloring contained salmon, some blues and browns which perfectly fit the look and feel the couple was after.

The entire cabin had infloor heat zoned off appropriately to compensate for differences in floor materials. Wood floors typically need to run hotter than slate or stone floors. Typically bathrooms, halls, entry ways, and sometimes kitchens go with some sort of stone flooring. After a few easy adjustments the flooring was balanced perfectly for heat.

In the end, the couple went from high frustration to genuine excitement. Their lake home has become a family retreat. And for us…we got to make another life long dream come to fruition. Everybody won.

Jim Raboin heads up BlueStone Construction & Project Management, LLC …a design/build lake home general contracting firm serving Minnesota and Wisconsin lake country.
