Everyone loves the relaxing glow of a fireplace, whether it is in your living room or at a camping spot in the woods. One trend that has come on strong in recent years is the outdoor fireplace – either stand-alone, portable units (fire pits) or a brick structure that is in itself, a decorative addition to the home.

One of the key advantages to having an outdoor fireplace is being able to extend the use of your patio into the cooler months. If you build your fireplace within a covered porch area, it can even be used on rainy days, or for the very hearty souls, when the snow flies.

Before you even lay one brick (or stone) for your fireplace, you must decide whether it will burn wood or gas. Each has its own merit.

Gas fireplaces are easy to start, burn clean and odorless, and can be set up to look imitate a wood-burning flame. Some gas fireplaces even have a remote device to light the flame from a short distance.

Wood burning fireplaces takes a little more effort. First is the need to have a dry place to stack wood, unless you use pressed logs bought at a store. Starting a wood fire is also not as simple as flipping a switch. But for people who love the smoky smell and the sound of a crackling fire, there is nothing like the real thing.

Designs are unlimited

Depending on the space available and your budget, outdoor fireplaces can be as simple, or as elaborate the mind can create. However, there are municipal laws and regulations that may quash designs that are over the top. Outdoor fireplaces must be built within municipal codes, which often dictate what type of materials can be used. Most importantly, fire safety and adequate ventilation systems must be adhered to for everyone’s sake.

Have you decided where you would like to have your backyard fireplace? Does space allow for a gathering area away from the main house? Some designs have incorporated the back side of the fireplace used inside the home. This should be completed during the initial building of the home’s fireplace, as there will need to be two flues, but both can share the same chimney.

The most popular material for outdoor fireplaces is stone. With such a wide range of colors, textures and sizes, stone creates a natural, relaxing oasis for entertaining or just unwinding after a hectic day. Because stone is impervious to the wrath of Mother Nature, outdoor fireplaces will last for years without significant maintenance.

What is green plumbing? Well, green plumbing when applied to residential plumbing layouts, would mean plumbing that reduces your energy and or water wastage; an efficient plumbing system.

There are a variety of products out there that can save you water, but some are counter productive and some are a pain in the you-know-what. Others are certainly worthwhile and can even save you money.

The biggest factor involved in water and energy wastage is human behavior. It’s our behaviors that waste the most energy and the most water. We all does it… leave lights on, leave water running when not necessary, linger in the shower… Going green seems to often lead to less convenience. But humans are after exactly that… convenience. That’s why microwave ovens, took off. Dishwashers, washing machines, trash compactors, automatic sprinkler systems, it’s all about convenience.

Some water conservation products address these behaviors. Low flow fixtures reduce the rate at which water flows from a fixture, so we use less water when we leave it running. This can be an inconvenience though, when you have to stand there and wait longer to fill up that pitcher or sink. Low flow toilets that don’t always work with one flush.

There are numerous “gray water” systems that reclaim waste water like from your washing machine to use in flushing toilets or watering the lawn.

It’s not hard to find water saving appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines. Probably all of them now at least have water conservation cycles or modes. I recently was talking to a guy who had just bought a new Bosch water conserving dishwasher. He was having a problem because the dishwasher didn’t draw a high enough flow of water to turn on the water heater. To get clean dishes he has to run hot water in the sink while the dishwasher fills. So much for water conservation.

There are some water conservation products which do offer both convenience and save water. They are known as hot water demand systems. They get you your hot water to you faster and you don’t run any water down the drain. The pumps are very efficient consuming less than $2.00 per year in electricity to operate. Not only are you saving water and energy with a demand system, but you are also reducing your carbon foot print.

Every gallon of water that you do not dump down the drain is one gallon less sewage that has to be treated and pumped etc which in turn uses less energy and thus results in reduced green house gas being released into the atmosphere.

Don’t confuse hot water demand systems with those “luke warm circulating systems” on the market like the Laing Autocirc1, the Grundfos Comfort System, and the Watts Premier. These systems circulate warm water through the hot water piping and the cold water piping, but in doing so consume a lot of energy making your water heater work harder and costing you money. You also end up with warm water in your cold water lines and you must purge those lines of the lukewarm water to get cold water from the faucet.

Tankless water heaters typically take longer to get hot water to your fixtures wasting more water than hot water systems that use tank type water heaters. Demand hot water systems do work with tankless water heaters as long as you get one powerful enough, some just don’t have enough power to generate enough flow to turn on a tankless water heater.

So go green and install a hot water demand system. It’s a very earth friendly thing to do. You will feel good about what you are doing for the planet and you get the added convenience of fast hot water!

It is safe to say that the current economic climate has not been easy for the heating industry. Nonetheless, installers should not be put off by the economic downturn. They should not be discouraged and wait around hoping for the situation to get better. Installers have a number of opportunities available to them. It is just about spotting these opportunities and making the most of them.

Unfortunately many installers fail to recognise these opportunities that come to them and take advantage. One particular area is the radiator market. This area of the market has grown in popularity over a period of time and there are many products available.

As the local government has continued to make investments in social housing and public building works, such as healthcare and education, this has led to an increased demand in specialist heating products which can cater for these specific areas.

Furthermore, many homeowners who were previously contemplating moving home are now improving their homes instead. This has led to increased demand for designer radiators and products which offer great design and high performance.

Consumers are also concerned about reducing their expenditure on fuel bills. They are trying to find different ways to cost-cut. Having an efficient heating system has become increasingly appealing as it is seen as a great way of achieving this goal.

The installer should listen carefully to the customer’s needs and wants, and provide them with a wide variety of options that will cater to these. This will encourage the customer to think carefully about the options available to them before coming to a decision.

Many customers will have fairly drab looking radiators in their homes. Therefore they would be looking for the opportunity to give their radiators a makeover as they recognise that the radiator does not just have to be a practical item in the house to be hidden away. It can also be seen as a decorative item in itself, and as an installer, you can help see the customer this point of view.

Provide your consumer with a wide range of options. Tell them that you can have double-panelled radiators, single-panelled or one which is clear glass. The variety of styles and designs you can choose from are endless.

Towel warmers are also on the increase in popularity. They can come in a variety of models just like radiators. There are also a wide range of floor stand designs available, which allows for greater flexibility in your home design, and making your bathroom very stylish.

The radiator in the home does not just have to be there to provide heat. It has the capacity to be stylish and trendy too. As an installer if you are successful in making the customer aware of this, you may be onto a winner.

When you set up shop in your first new home it isn’t unusual to be lacking in some very vital areas like household tools; while you are moving in, as well as for day to day living, a well stocked tool box is a great resource to have.

The first thing that you will need is a container to put your tools into though you may want to gather together all your tools first so that you know what size of container you’ll need. Many toolboxes are made of metal though there are some good quality ones that are made from heavy duty plastic as well. You can also just buy yourself a small plastic tote to keep your tools in as well.

The number one more used tool in a home is usually a hammer; whether you use it for hanging pictures or installing new baseboards, a hammer is a necessary tool for every household. A light to medium-weight hammer will be adequate for any of the day to day jobs that you might need it for.

The next type of tool that you will need is a screwdriver. In actual fact, a small set of screwdrivers is best; make sure that your set has a slotted screwdriver as well as a Phillips (crosshead), a Robertson (square head), and perhaps the less common Torx and Pozidriv cross point styles. Many sets of screwdrivers come with interchangeable long and short handles that you can affix the bits to which makes them easier to accomplish a variety of tasks with.

Another type of tool that is very useful for home use is pliers. It is a good idea to have on hand a few types of pliers and at least one pair that has a wire cutter integrated into the design. A few different shapes of pliers will be useful, as well as one pair of vice grips which you can lock closed to help you hold on to things.

There are a few more items that will round out your tool box’s usefulness. A decent measuring tape is essential, particularly if you have pictures to hang. A level is useful for putting up shelves or hanging pictures at the same height. A box of razors and razorblade holder for scraping is a really good tool particularly for removing paint or other residue from glass.

As you encounter more needs for tools in your home, no doubt that your collection will increase; these tools should give you a good start for setting up and decorating your new home.

We forget that solar power comes in many guises. Stand alone solar lighting can provide simple efficient lighting to the outdoor areas of your home. Either installed as off the shelf or a DIY solar panel hook-up, it can provide garden, garage or porch lighting for home security and enhance your homes appearance. When it comes to solar, we are so used to seeing solar hot water systems and solar panel electrical systems, that we forget that the suns heat and energy can be used in many other ways.

Home designers these days are well versed in passive solar design. However, these features are not always adopted unless asked to do so by the client, or unless required by local regulations to implement them as energy saving measures. If you are considering a new home, you are well advised to discuss the many design features that would make your home highly energy efficient and practically free of heating and cooling costs, simply by applying good design.

Solar can provide heating and cooling to the home. The heat energy of the sun can be trapped and recirculated in a heat collector on the roof or a wall. These are usually painted black and heat air or water containers that become a storage of heat, they in turn heat air which is circulated through the home. These heat storage containers can even become part of a wall, radiating warmth into the room. Typically though, the heat trap warms air that is then circulated via ducts throughout the house. A fan is used to push the warm air through your home, which can be powered by a solar panel.

Cooling is achieved in a similar way. A dark or black heat module or tower on the roof is heated by the sun. As the air in the tower is heated, it rises, it in turn draws cooler air, often drawn through underground piping where it is cooled, then into the home. This simple method can provide comfortable air temperatures in the home. When coupled with an attic fan that extracts hot air from your roof space will significantly lower internal temperature.

Looking for an easy project that you can do to improve your home? How about going green with your plumbing? By making your home more energy efficient and water efficient you’re are improving the resale value of your home and providing yourself with reduced water and energy bills and added convenience.

If you have to wait for an extended period of time to get your hot water you are a good candidate for one of the many instant hot water systems. Most don’t really provide you with “instant” hot water, but can considerably reduce your wait time, and can even nearly eliminate running water down the drain while you wait.

There are a couple of retro-fit friendly instant or more appropriately fast hot water systems that are easy to install with no major changes required for your plumbing layout. Although these fast hot water delivery systems install under the sink, they are not to be confused with under the sink water heaters. They make a good one-afternoon home improvement project for almost any skill level. If you can change a supply hose you can install one of these systems.

There are basically two types of systems, luke-warm circulating systems like the Laing Autocirc1, and the RedyTemp, and hot water demand systems such as the Metlund system and the Chilipepper pump.

The warm water circulating systems are small pumps designed to circulate the water from the water heater through the piping and on back to the water heater. When the pump senses the temperature has reached the lower set point, about 90 degrees, then it turns on until the pump senses the upper temperature, about 100 degrees, when it shuts off the pump. The system does this over and over keeping the water in the piping warm.

You end up paying for all that heat energy it takes to keep the piping warm. You also no longer have cold water in your cold water pipes. Now it’s warm.

The second type of system is known as a hot water demand system, and the pump only pumps the water to the fixture when you demand it by pressing a button. Hot water demand systems make a better home improvement project because they provide even more convenience and use less energy than the recirculating systems and will really add to the green aspects of your plumbing system.

Again, the pump mounts under the sink and is easy to hook up. With the demand system when the hot water reaches the pump the pump shuts off so you don’t end up with hot water in the cold water pipes.

Demand systems don’t run very long or very often so they typically use about $1.00 per year in electricity, and you don’t run any water down the drain waiting for hot water. They don’t use any more energy than a system with no pump since they only fill the pipe between the water heater and the fixture, just like if you ran the faucet.

If you’re looking for an easy home improvement project you can complete in a weekend, one that will add value to your home, and will provide you with lasting benefits like faster hot water, water savings, and energy savings, then install a demand system today!

There have been many stories in the newspapers surrounding the tragic consequences of unsafe gas work. There have been reports of people suffering from brain damage and paralysis from carbon monoxide exposure. Often this would be a result from faulty fitted or badly repaired gas appliances. Unfortunately the sting in the tale is that most of these tragedies could have been prevented, had the correct safety measures been in place.

The relevance of the Gas Safe Register

The basis for the Gas Safe Register is to make sure that the public is protected at all times from unsafe gas work. This involves keeping track of all the reports that come in outlining faulty appliances and repairs. The Gas Safe Register takes all of these reports that threaten gas safety very seriously.

The firms that are registered with Gas Safe are expected to take gas safety very seriously. In complying with the regulations, they are expected to rectify any faults reported by the customer. As the businesses are responsible for owing a duty of care to their customers, they should take action quickly. If the business does not do this then they could face the suspension of their registration or even be completely removed from the Register.

It is important to note that most businesses are very dedicated and honest in their approach by sticking to the law. They invest quite a bit of time, funds, and training into their registration, therefore they may feel it’s unfair when it comes to complaints from customers.

However, public safety should always come first and only high standards of gas work will be acceptable. It is important that a balance is struck between taking care of a customer’s needs whilst also ensuring that the registered engineers are treated with fairness and respect.

There are many complaints made that are completely unfounded. To avoid this, it is better to keep the communication open between the customer and the business so that the customer can complain to the business when they are not satisfied with the gas work.

Striking the right balance

The Gas Safe Register is responsible for ensuring that the businesses are treated fairly whilst maintaining public safety. To demonstrate its fairness policy, as part of the investigation process, the Gas Safe Register invites businesses to participate too. This has many beneficial aspects. It allows to business to amend its ways and put things right. In addition, it allows the business to learn from the mistake to avoid future problems. It also gives the business the opportunity to maintain good customer relations.

If it is brought to the attention that the work was carried out by an incompetent or unregistered person, then this will call for immediate inspection and the information will be passed on to the Health and Safety Executive.

To ensure safety, it is necessary that when a defect notice is issued, the business takes the responsibility of completing the rectification work within the deadline specified by the Gas Safety Register. If for some reason the business fails to carry out the remedial work, then it should make alternative arrangements with the customer for another registered business to do it.

Offering efficiency levels of over 85 percent condensing boilers are by some distance the most energy efficient type of central heating boilers currently available in the UK. In comparison a new standard boiler will be at most 78 percent efficient with older systems being as little as 60 percent efficient.

A condensing boiler makes better use of the heat that it generates from burning fuels such as gas or oil. They work by recovering the heat that would normally be wasted by conventional boiler systems. In a conventional boiler some heat is lost because the boiler releases very hot waste gases from its flue. Instead of wasting this energy a condensing boiler uses some of the heat from these waste gases to heat water returning from your central heating system, so it requires less heat from the burner. This makes your condensing boiler more efficient.

Choosing to install a condensing boiler is a great idea for a number of reasons. As the most energy efficient type of boiler they require less energy to heat your home. Since you are using less energy your heating bills can be reduced significantly. Although condensing boilers are a little more expensive than other alternative heating systems through savings on your heating bills this extra cost can be paid back within two years.

Condensing boilers are also an environmentally friendly heating system for your home. By using less energy they help to reduce your carbon footprint. Used in conjunction with cavity wall insulation and double glazing they are perfect for both making your home environmentally friendly and keeping your home warm all year round.

Condensing boilers fall into two main categories – regular and combination. Since combination boilers aren’t compatible with all types of central heating system it is best to seek the advice of a professional heating engineer to find out which type is most suitable for your home.

Compass Gas central heating Liverpool provide a range of heating solutions including condensing boilers and cavity wall insulation.

With the economic slump that everybody is now experiencing there are people that are looking into more ways to save money. To save more money it is a great idea to make your home energy efficient. By doing this you will decrease your monthly power bill.

To keep your home at a good comfortable temperature insulation is needed. If you have the right insulation put into your home you will see your power bills drop. But to have your home insulated well you must also have your floors, ceiling, basement walls, overhangs, and interior walls insulated. When air can leak in it is costing you money. So you need to be sure that all cracks and crevices are sealed tight.

Replacing lights to a energy efficient model will help your home become energy efficient. You should make use of your dimmer switches also because this saves energy and money. Another great way to save on your power bill and make you home energy efficient is to open up your curtians and blinds and let some natural light pour in. The look and feel of your home will be different with daylight shining inwards, so it may help to repaint some of the walls.

By changing any room in your home paint helps; it can change a dull room back into a light flowing room. Many people like the effect paint has in many of their rooms in their home. Just about anything can be painted. Just about anything can be painted using your choice of a brush, roller, spray, or a sponge. The way that the paint is applied depends on how the finished product will look.

Prior to painting anything you need to decide upon the color that you want. Paint swatched may seem like a good idea but they do not show the true color. Brighter along with darker colors tend to appear strong on walls, ceilings, and woodwork. Another thing to remember is that pale colors tend to fade. Before you buy all of the paint you should first purchase a small sample and paint a tiny area, this will help you be certain that it is the right color. If you plan on having the color you choose for awhile then it would be best to buy more then needed so it will match at a later date if you happen to need it.

Once you have the paint that you will require you need to think about what you will be applying the paint with. I find it easier to paint woodwork with a brush and walls and ceilings with a roller and a sponge for the closer jobs. You need to pick a few brushes or rollers that are different sizes so you can use them in the middle and the close to jobs.

Once the painting is over, and all of the rooms look good with their new colors, then you need to pick out home appliances that will help to keep the power and gas bills down.

When you are using your home appliances you are using a lot of energy. The best way to save energy here is to shop for new appliances that have the energy star. The expense of these appliances might be more but in the end you will be saving.

Install some solar panels this will make your home energy efficient. Energy is created with these using natural resources. Solar panels can come in the form of a solar thermal collectors that help the suns energy heat water. What a great way to use the suns natural energy and to make your home energy efficient.

There are a lot of home improvement ideas floating around out there, and every one has his own opinion of what a good home improvement idea is. Well I think instant hot water from your fixtures is a great idea! It will save you not only time, but thousands of gallons of water, and it can save you energy too.

Saving water and energy means you are reducing your carbon footprint and taking steps to going green. Help yourself and help our planet at the same time.

Probably most people don’t think about plumbing when they think about home improvement projects. After all, the plumbing layout has been already implemented and so changing the plumbing system into a green system by improving the plumbing layout is an unlikely project.

However, fast hot water is easy to obtain by using a hot water demand system.

Few would argue that it’s no fun standing there waiting for the hot water to arrive at the fixture. You stand there and watch the water run down the drain. But you don’t have to; you can install a hot water demand system in a single afternoon. Demand hot water system pumps can be obtained for less than $200, making it a fast and inexpensive home improvement idea or do-it-yourself project.

A demand hot water system delivers the hot water from your existing water heater at a higher flow rate than your faucet can deliver. That way the hot water gets to the fixture more quickly reducing your wait time.

More importantly, you don’t run water down the drain while you wait. When you turn on the fixture you get instant hot water. The demand pump connects between your hot and cold water lines under the furthest sink from your water heater. When you want hot water you “demand” it by pressing a button.

The pump starts up and send hot water to the fixture in seconds, returning the cooled off hot water that was in the hot water pipes back to the water heater through the existing cold water lines. When hot water reaches the pump, it shuts off. Now when your turn the spigot you get instant hot water.

Some models of demand hot water systems connect up to your plumbing with faucet supply hoses just like the ones already under your sink.

Hot water demand systems can also operate with tankless water heaters unlike traditional hot water recirculation systems. Just make sure the demand hot water system you purchase is powerful enough to turn on your tankless water heater. Some models like the Metlund S-50T and S-70T don’t have much power, and won’t turn on many models of tankless water heaters.
These quick hot water systems, at least the demand systems, use very little electricity since they run for such a short time, and only when you demand it. Typically they consume less than $2.00 per year in electricity costs.

With all the benefits of saved time, saved water, saved energy and reduced carbon foot print and the small initial investment, a hot water demand system should be in nearly every home. Don’t wait any longer, install a hot water demand system today and get instant hot water when you turn on your fixture – a great home improvement idea!
