Cane and wicker have been used to make furniture for over 5000 years. But why have these materials endured the test of time when so many others come and gone?
- Sturdy and Durable – wicker is naturally strong, thick and durable. It also has the advantage of becoming flexible when heated but returns to its sturdy state when cooled. The process of weaving wicker rattan makes it extraordinarily durable, meaning products will last for years and years.
- Lightweight – some people believe that the heavier an item is the stronger it will be. Cane and wicker proves this is incorrect as they are extremely durable and resilient to the effects of both time and age whilst being incredibly lightweight.
- Comfortable – Cane and wicker has a natural ‘give’ to allow complete comfort
- Weather proof – Not only are they able to withstand the elements, making it ideal for patio and outdoor furniture, but the open weave design prevents it from retaining heat even when it is placed in the sun all day. They are not warped by the elements. Of course during the British winter you can always make your suite cosy by adding cushions and covers.
- Timeless – Wicker has a long and illustrious history. It was first used during the Egyptian times and has since been passed to the Romans, through Europe to America, was incredibly popular with Victorian England, in the 1960s and 1970s and today. This can be attributed to its status as an all-natural product – nature does not date where as fashions come and go.
- Versatile – As mentioned earlier, they are lightweight and can be made to occupy only a fraction of the space of heavier timber products. This allows it to fit neatly into any home environment. Because covers and cushions are usually purchased separately from the cane and wicker itself, this allows the consumer to choose an upholstery that fits in with their décor and also to change it as and when they please without the expense of paying for a new suite.
- Natural – because every element of wicker furniture is made by nature – including the joins – it is guaranteed consistent quality. Unlike disposable and flat pack furniture which have a very short life span and will cost more money in the long term, cane and wicker furniture is made to last for decades.
